[2026-04-17 10:23:00] Sam Willis: Transcription: I literally lost my mind because I'm driving like I just left the house. My phone is in my lap because I just plugged it into the charger because I didn't charge it last night while I was sleeping of course so it's definitely needs some juice and so it's just sitting in my lap and I look over and I get my work phone out of my purse and then I'm like oh my fucking God where is my phone? I cannot find my phone anywhere like my normal phone. And I'm like digging everywhere in all my purse pocket shit I start turning around to go home and I'm like it's in my fucking lap like it's literally right here It's gonna be a long day. I signed up for 430 class and I'm thinking maybe I just canceled that. How are you?
[2026-04-17 10:37:00] Sam Willis: Bro if I get through all this and he’s already shit everything out, I’m going to be pissed. Lol
[2026-04-17 10:39:00] Sam Willis: Nah he’s still definitely backed up.
[2026-04-17 10:40:00] Sam Willis: Let me just try to take a shit righttttt here 🤦♀️
[2026-04-17 10:41:00] Sam Willis: I’m never getting a long haired cat again. I feel like it’s hairballs
[2026-04-17 10:41:00] Dave: Audio Message.caf Transcription: Poor kitty I was just trying poor guy. I'm good. I'm sorry you're losing your fucking mind That plaza of course you have ever found it Phone thing is pretty crazy How old is this cat like what do they even do for cats when she just kinda like drop them off in some other neighborhood and go get a new kitten
[2026-04-17 10:42:00] Sam Willis: DAVE!!!
[2026-04-17 10:43:00] Sam Willis: Would you just drop off grey kitty? No
[2026-04-17 10:43:00] Sam Willis: Btw. I haven’t seen grey kitty pics or videos in awhile
[2026-04-17 10:43:00] Sam Willis: Does she still want to be Bears bestie?
[2026-04-17 10:43:00] Sam Willis: DO YOU STILL HAVE HER?!?!
[2026-04-17 10:44:00] Sam Willis: 😱
[2026-04-17 10:44:00] Dave: Hahaha, yes… she’s still flirting with Bear all the time. Lately she has been sneaking up behind him WHILE HES EATING
[2026-04-17 10:44:00] Sam Willis: Jesus Christ you scared me
[2026-04-17 10:44:00] Sam Willis: Simba will have to get an enema likely
[2026-04-17 10:45:00] Sam Willis: This isn’t our first rodeo. It’ll probably cost me $500
[2026-04-17 10:48:00] Dave: <no text>
[2026-04-17 10:48:00] Dave: Omg!
[2026-04-17 10:57:00] Sam Willis: Simba is 13-I think you asked
[2026-04-17 11:01:00] Sam Willis: What they’ve done for him in the past is given him an enema
[2026-04-17 11:01:00] Sam Willis: But first take X-rays to see how backed up he is.
[2026-04-17 11:01:00] Sam Willis: I remember the first time we did this, I was SHOOKETH
[2026-04-17 11:02:00] Dave: Oh I bet
[2026-04-17 11:02:00] Dave: Pretty routine now though?
[2026-04-17 11:02:00] Sam Willis: Hmmm no. I think this is like the 3rd time? Maybe 4?
[2026-04-17 11:02:00] Sam Willis: Poop allllll up in that colon lol
[2026-04-17 11:02:00] Sam Willis: Hmmm no. I think this is like the 3rd time? Maybe 4?
[2026-04-17 11:03:00] Sam Willis: The first time was just so new to me and he was still young. I cried. Lol. Bc he cried out in pain.
[2026-04-17 11:03:00] Dave: Awwwwe
[2026-04-17 11:05:00] Sam Willis: Haaaa this is gonna cost $900. Going to do bloodwork too
[2026-04-17 11:05:00] Sam Willis: Happy Friday to meeeeeee
[2026-04-17 11:06:00] Dave: Oof
[2026-04-17 11:06:00] Sam Willis: You know what the worst part about this day is? I have a fucking 1x1 with Stephen
[2026-04-17 11:06:00] Dave: Ngl... I’d be thinking about a euthanasia and trip to the human society 🫣
[2026-04-17 11:07:00] Dave: Even if it was GK
[2026-04-17 11:07:00] Sam Willis: DAVE!!! absolutely the fuck not lol
[2026-04-17 11:07:00] Sam Willis: This is just like…a normal year lol
[2026-04-17 11:07:00] Sam Willis: He’s my first child! lol
[2026-04-17 11:08:00] Sam Willis: But also. I’m not getting any more cats after these 3 lol
[2026-04-17 11:08:00] Sam Willis: Maybbeeee just one, in the future. Maybe.
[2026-04-17 11:08:00] Dave: Idk man.. maybe up to like, $200..
[2026-04-17 11:09:00] Dave: Dogs? Sure…
[2026-04-17 11:09:00] Sam Willis: You can’t even get a normal blood panel, like annual bloodwork, done on a cat for $200
[2026-04-17 11:09:00] Sam Willis: Vaccines alone cost more than that
[2026-04-17 11:09:00] Dave: I can get a full HUMAN blood panel done for less than that
[2026-04-17 11:09:00] Sam Willis: Also. There’s a shepherd here that is FREAKING OUT and it’s making me so sad.
[2026-04-17 11:10:00] Sam Willis: Bc we have insurance.
[2026-04-17 11:10:00] Dave: ….you’re supposed to vaccinate cats!? 😅
[2026-04-17 11:10:00] Sam Willis: Bc we have insurance.
[2026-04-17 11:10:00] Dave: No, you can get it done for <$150 out of pocket
[2026-04-17 11:13:00] Sam Willis: The SNAP test, leukemia vaccine, FVRCP, and rabies are all standard for cats.
[2026-04-17 11:25:00] Sam Willis: lol, big ol shepherd
[2026-04-17 11:26:00] Sam Willis: I wish I brought snacks. I’m starving
[2026-04-17 11:26:00] Dave: Is that your vet?
[2026-04-17 11:26:00] Dave: It looks like a restaurant lol.
[2026-04-17 11:26:00] Sam Willis: Yea. The vet lolol
[2026-04-17 11:31:00] Sam Willis: OK tell me all about your day. What are you up to? What about this weekend?
[2026-04-17 11:32:00] Dave: I’m actually working on softcopy 😋
[2026-04-17 11:32:00] Sam Willis: Woahhhh!!
[2026-04-17 11:33:00] Dave: I’ve been trying to get the motivation… And then yesterday, an updated version of Claude Code as well as a new Anthropic model (Opus 4.7) came out.
[2026-04-17 11:34:00] Dave: So that did it. I fixed the site publishing and now I’m just getting up to date.
[2026-04-17 11:35:00] Sam Willis: That’s it? All you needed was a version update? 😂
[2026-04-17 11:35:00] Sam Willis: And suddenly motivated again? lol you’re adorable
[2026-04-17 11:36:00] Dave: So next I’m going to point it at the Ask page and see what it can do for that. Mainly because I forgot how to use it 😅
[2026-04-17 11:36:00] Dave: You know me, baby 😘
[2026-04-17 11:38:00] Dave: And nothing this weekend, hopefully

[2026-04-17 12:01:00] Sam Willis: 😬😬😬
[2026-04-17 12:01:00] Sam Willis: I’m a bad mom!
[2026-04-17 12:03:00] Sam Willis: They told me to leave him there for a few hours. They’ll probably have to do 2 enemas. Good lordddd poor babes.
[2026-04-17 12:04:00] Sam Willis: I’m going home to eat Oreos and milk lmao
[2026-04-17 12:04:00] Dave: Yes! Do it!
[2026-04-17 12:04:00] Sam Willis: And I canceled my workout lmao

[2026-04-17 12:05:00] Dave: You’re still doing great in the grand scheme of things 😘

[2026-04-17 13:18:00] Dave: We had met at a veterans thing a while ago, but he came over recently to talk about 3d printing
[2026-04-17 13:19:00] Sam Willis: And you still don’t know his name? Lmao
[2026-04-17 13:19:00] Dave: Hahaha no
[2026-04-17 13:21:00] Dave: 🤪

[2026-04-17 13:22:00] Dave: And it has gotten to the point where I feel bad asking him 😂😅
[2026-04-17 13:24:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-17 13:25:00] Sam Willis: Tan Nguyen possibly
[2026-04-17 13:25:00] Dave: Oh wow!

[2026-04-17 17:06:00] Dave: Omg are we getting a soul-divorce??
[2026-04-17 17:06:00] Sam Willis: He’s still not home 😭 it’s been 5 hrs since I left him. I just woke up from attempting to/semi napping and called them. They said he still hasn’t gotten out as much as they would like.
[2026-04-17 17:08:00] Sam Willis: I’m just really out of it today. I told work around 1 that I was taking the rest of the day off.
[2026-04-17 17:10:00] Sam Willis: Why can’t my body sleeeppp?? I was in bed for about 2.5 hrs and I don’t think I ever actually fell asleep.
[2026-04-17 17:14:00] Sam Willis: The vet just called back. They’ve given him two enemas so far and he hasn’t passed anything! The dr dug up in there and got a little out but barely anything. So they’re going to give him a third enema (wtf) and I’ll pick him up in 2 hrs regardless and hopefully he shits a lot tonight. wtf
[2026-04-17 17:21:00] Dave: Ugh, I’m sorry sweetie 😭
[2026-04-17 17:22:00] Dave: I’m glad you took off early! Too bad you couldn’t sleep though
[2026-04-17 17:23:00] Sam Willis: Thanks baby.
[2026-04-17 17:26:00] Sam Willis: And Christian might not be going out anymore. So this is his friend, who is also an ex, who is also the first and only guy he’s ever like romantically loved…. Who is also bi. Who also just split up with his girlfriend literally last night. And now the guy is saying he’s having a super shitty day and maybe doesn’t want to do the 2+ hr drive up from Tucson (I sure as hell wouldnt). So Christian now offered to go to him to Tucson lol. And he said he’ll get back to him after work lol. It probably won’t happen but 🤷♀️ what a quinky dink about the breakup
[2026-04-17 17:26:00] Sam Willis: A night alone sounds so fabulous though
[2026-04-17 17:34:00] Dave: Yeah that is quite a quinky dink.. good for them though. Maybe some gay rebound sex is just what they need
[2026-04-17 17:34:00] Dave: And some might alone is definitely what you need
[2026-04-17 17:38:00] Sam Willis: Speaking of gay

[2026-04-17 21:26:00] Sam Willis: Night baby. Sweet dreams! Talk to you tomorrow!
The voice message came in at 9:47 p.m. — Sam's voice, flat with the exhaustion of a day that had eaten her alive. Simba's home. He's sleeping. I'm on the couch and I can't move. I smell like vet office. I love you.
Dave listened twice. Then he called her.
"Baby."
"Mmh."
"Are you on the couch?"
"Mmh."
"Can you walk?"
A long pause. The sound of her breathing, shallow, the television murmuring somewhere behind her. "Don't want to."
"That's not what I asked."
He heard her shift. Heard the creak of cushion, the small protest sound she made when her body didn't want to obey her. She was wearing — he could tell from the rustle — the soft old T-shirt she wore when she had nothing left.
"I can walk."
"Good girl. Go to the bedroom. Leave the TV on for Simba if he's out there. Bring your phone."
"Dave, I'm so —"
"I know you are. That's why you're going to do what I say tonight. You don't have to think. Do you want that?"
Another pause. He could hear the click in her throat.
"Yes."
"Yes what."
"Yes, sir."
"Good. Go."
He stayed on the line while she moved. The apartment sounds — a dog huffing somewhere, the hum of a refrigerator, the soft catch in her breath when she bent to check on the cat. She narrated without being asked, because she knew he wanted to know. He's breathing. He's warm. His little paw is twitching. Dave made low sounds of acknowledgment, the way he did in meetings when he wanted someone to keep talking.
"I'm in the bedroom."
"Lock the door. Christian home?"
"No, he's — he's packing for Tucson probably."
"Lock it anyway."
He heard the click.
"Sit on the edge of the bed. Don't lie down yet. I don't want you falling asleep on me."
She laughed — a wrecked little sound. "I might anyway."
"Then I'll wake you up."
She went quiet. That specific quiet she got when his voice caught her somewhere she hadn't armored. It was the quiet he knew better than anyone knew anything about her — the sound of Sam dropping the last inch of the day.
"Put the phone on the nightstand. Speaker. I want my hands free metaphorically and yours free actually."
"Okay."
The audio shifted — more room, less mouth.
"Here's what's happening tonight," he said. "You did everything today. You sat on that cold vet floor and held that cat and wrote the check and didn't cry where anyone could see. You came home and fed the dogs and didn't eat yourself. You are running on Oreos and milk and fumes, baby, and I am not going to let you carry one more thing."
He heard her breath hitch.
"So I'm going to carry it. Every bit of it. You are going to take your shirt off and your underwear off and get under the covers. You're not going to do anything. I'm going to talk. You're going to listen. Your only job tonight is to be mine and let me use you to make you feel better. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir." Barely audible.
"Say it again."
"Yes, sir."
"Good girl."
The sound she made at that — half a whimper, half the breath going out of her — was something he felt in his teeth. He'd heard it a hundred times and it still undid him every time, the way her body answered those two words before her mind could catch up.
He listened to the fabric go. The drag of cotton over skin. The soft thud of clothing hitting floor. The sheets pulling back. Her settling in, small sounds of a tired body finding a shape it could rest in.
"Where's your hand."
"On my stomach."
"Move it down. Slow. Not where you think. I want it on your thigh."
She did.
"Feel how warm your thigh is. Feel the inside of it, right up high where it's softest. Not the crease. Not yet. Just the skin."
"Okay."
"Tell me what it feels like."
"...Warm. Soft. My hand's cold."
"Use the other one then. I want you warmer than that."
A pause as she switched. He could practically see it — her on her back in the low light, dogs somewhere nearby but quiet for once, the cat convalescent on the couch, her body finally still under his voice.
"Better?"
"Yes, sir."
"Now the crease. Just the edge. Not inside."
A small inhale.
"You're already wet."
It wasn't a question. He knew. Four years in, he knew her body like a language he'd been studying since before he realized he was studying it.
"Yes, sir."
"Of course you are. You spent all day being strong and nobody touched you. Nobody told you anything that didn't need something from you. Nobody looked at you and said put it down, let me."
Her breath caught.
"Spread your legs for me."
The sheet rustled.
"Wider. I want them open like I'm between them. Which I am. Pretend I am. I'm right there, Sam. You feel me?"
"Yes."
"Two fingers. Soft. Just lay them on your cunt. Don't move. Let them sit there."
He heard the shift of her arm, then the long, shuddering exhale.
"Can you feel how hot it is?"
"Yes, sir."
"That's for me. That's all for me. You didn't do anything today and your body already knew what it wanted. It wanted to be put down. It wanted to be told."
"Please —"
"No. Not yet. Hand stays still."
A small sound of frustration that he knew was also relief. She didn't want to decide. She wanted him to decide. She'd been deciding all goddamn day.
"Tell me about Simba."
"What?"
"Tell me about the vet. While you hold yourself open for me. Talk."
It broke something in her — the impossible combination of it, the tenderness and the filth braided together. He heard it crack open in her voice.
"They — they had to give him two enemas, Dave, and he still hadn't — and the vet kept looking at me like I was being a bad —"
"You're not a bad anything."
"— and I was just sitting on the floor and he was so little in the carrier, and I —"
"Keep your hand there. Don't move it."
"— I just wanted someone to tell me I was doing it right."
"You were doing it right. You do it right, baby. You love that cat more than that vet has ever loved anything. You hear me?"
"Yes, sir." Wet now. Her voice wet, her cheeks almost certainly wet, her hand — he knew — wet underneath.
"Good girl. Now one finger. Inside. Slow."
He heard the change in her breath.
"Is it me?"
"It's you, sir."
"Whose cunt is it?"
"Yours."
"Then I'll tell it what to do. Curl your finger forward. Right where I'd be. Don't rush. Press."
A sound — low, broken, the sound of a body that had been bracing for fourteen hours finally letting go of something.
"There you go. There. Another finger. Two. Feel how open you are for me. You've been open for me since I said your name."
"Dave —"
"Sir."
"Sir, please —"
"Please what."
"Please let me —"
"No. You don't come yet. You stay right there. Two fingers deep, not moving. Just full. You're allowed to be full. You're not allowed to be finished."
The sound she made was almost a sob. He let it sit in the speaker. He didn't soften. Softening now would be the wrong kind of kindness. Tonight she needed to be held by the thing that wouldn't let her go.
"Tell me what you wanted today that you didn't get."
"I don't — I can't —"
"Yes you can. Tell me."
"I wanted someone to come home. I wanted someone to —" Her voice snagged. "— to be there when I opened the door. I wanted to put the carrier down and have somebody take it from me."
"I know."
"And I had to feed the dogs and I hadn't eaten and I just —"
"I know. Baby. I know."
"I ate Oreos standing at the counter."
"I know you did."
"I'm so tired, sir."
"I know. I'm going to take care of it. I'm taking care of it right now. You feel me taking care of it?"
"Yes." Whispered. Wrecked.
"Move your fingers. Slow. In and out. Shallow at first. That's it. Listen to yourself. Can you hear how wet you are?"
She could. He could, through the phone, through nine hundred miles, the small obscene music of her hand working where his would have been. It was the sound that undid him every time — that small wet sound that meant her body had already said yes before she'd said anything.
"Now your thumb on your clit. Circles. Slow. The speed I do it. You know the speed."
"Yes, sir."
"Don't rush me."
"No, sir."
He listened. He listened to her breathing climb and then level, climb and level, her body learning his rhythm even with her own hand. When her breath started to skip he slowed her down with his voice alone. Easy. Easy, baby. Not yet. He could hold her at the edge with a syllable. He'd earned that. They'd built that between them, instruction by instruction, night by night, until her body answered his voice the way a tuned instrument answers a bow.
"Dave — sir — I can't —"
"You can. You will. You'll hold it because I told you to."
"Please —"
"Look at how good you are. Look at how much you can take when I tell you to take it. You think you couldn't do today? You did today. You're doing this. You can do anything I say."
She was crying now. Not sad crying. The other kind. The overfull kind, the kind that came when her body had more feeling in it than it could carry and had to leak some out somewhere. He'd named it for her once — overfull — and she'd used the word ever since.
"Please let me come, sir. Please. I need to. I'll be good, I'll —"
"You're already good. You're my good girl. You don't have to earn it tonight. I'm giving it to you because you need it."
"Thank you —"
"Come for me, Sam. Right now."
The sound she made when she broke was almost wordless — a long shuddering cry with his name underneath it, then his title, then nothing, just the rhythm of her breath coming apart, her hand still working because he hadn't told her to stop. He listened to the whole thing. Every second. The way her voice climbed and cracked and descended into small hitching sobs that were relief more than anything else. The way her breath kept catching after, little aftershocks, her body not done letting go even once the peak had passed.
"Hand off. Slow."
"...Yes, sir."
"Roll onto your side. Facing the phone. I want to hear you closer."
Fabric. A long exhale.
"You're okay. You're okay. Breathe with me. In — out. Good. Again. Good girl. My good girl."
Her breath gradually evened. He kept talking, low, steady, the voice he used for this — not the commanding voice, the other one, the one only she got to hear afterward, the one that was just warmth and certainty and I'm here.
"You did so good today. You did. That cat is alive because of you. Those dogs are fed because of you. You carried all of it and I am so fucking proud of you. You hear me?"
"Mmh."
"Water. Reach. There should be —"
"Nightstand."
"Drink."
He heard her drink.
"More."
She drank more.
"Good girl."
A small laugh — cracked, tired, real. "That still does it even when I'm destroyed."
"I know it does."
"I'm so tired, Dave."
"Sleep, baby."
"Stay on?"
"I'm staying on."
"All night?"
"All night."
He listened to her settle. The sound of her pulling the covers up. The small sigh she gave when her body finally understood it was allowed to be done. Somewhere in the apartment a dog resettled. The television murmured on, faint, and under it, the slow deepening of her breath as she drifted.
"Dave?"
"Yeah."
"Thank you."
"You don't thank me for that."
"I'm going to."
He smiled in the dark of his own bedroom, nine hundred miles east. "Okay. You're welcome."
"I love you."
"I love you. Go to sleep. I've got you."
He stayed on the line long after her breathing went heavy and slow. He listened to her sleep, and to the cat wheezing faintly somewhere in the background, and to the small domestic hum of her life continuing around her now that she'd finally been allowed to set it down. He didn't hang up. He wouldn't, until morning. That was the deal. That was always the deal. She carried the day; he carried her through the night; and between them, across all that distance, nothing was dropped.
The mare smelled blood a mile before the cabin came into view, and she fought the bit the whole way down.
Dave kept her under him with his knees, the reins loose in one gloved hand, the other resting near the butt of the Colt. The trail bent through piñon scrub burnt brown by August. Dust the color of old pennies. He could see the smoke now, thin and wrong, not a cookfire — somebody had put one out in a hurry and the green wood was giving them away.
Sam came up beside him on the roan, her hat tipped low, her face tipped lower.
"Two horses," she said. "Shod. Been standing a while."
"I see 'em."
"You want the front or the back."
He looked at her. The sun cut across her mouth and he felt the small mean tug of it — the want that had been riding him since dawn, since before dawn, since she'd lifted her canteen and he'd watched her throat work the water down. A whole territory between them and the next lawman and all he could think about was her mouth.
"Back," he said. "Come through when you hear the first one drop."
"Don't drop the wrong one, Virginia."
"I never have."
She smiled without showing teeth and reined the roan off into the wash.
He gave her three minutes. Counted them on the mare's slow breath. Then he walked the horse up to the porch like a man who owned the deed, swung down, looped the rein, and put his boot on the first step.
The door came open with a shotgun behind it.
"Easy," Dave said, and showed both palms. "I'm just looking for a man."
"You found two," said the one with the shotgun. Stringy, red-bearded, eyes like a kicked dog's. Behind him, at the table, the second man — bigger, slower, with a bounty of his own riding on the crown of his hat — didn't even bother to stand up.
"Name of Ketch," Dave said. "Paper says five hundred dollars dead. Six hundred living. I'd just as soon take him living, but I'm flexible."
The big man at the table laughed. "Son, you are by yourself on a one-horse porch."
"Am I."
The back door banged open and Sam put a bullet through the big man's shoulder before the shotgun could swing. The red-beard turned — too slow, already too slow — and Dave stepped inside him, drove the barrel of the Colt up under his jaw, and the room went briefly red.
Ketch slid off the chair and sat on the floor, holding the mess of his shoulder, grinning up at them like this was a joke he'd heard before.
"Well," he said. "Hell."
They bound him to the bedpost with his own belt and his own rope and a strip of his own shirt for the wound. Sam worked the knots. Dave kept the Colt on him until she was done, and then they dragged him upright and sat him where they could watch him, and then they went back out onto the porch to breathe.
The sun had dropped a hand's width. The smoke from the banked fire still rose crooked.
"Five hundred more, alive," Sam said.
"I heard."
"He'll keep till morning."
"He'll keep."
She leaned on the post. The sweat had darkened the band of her hat and a single strand of hair clung to her temple. He watched her watch the ridge. He watched her shoulders come down by degrees.
"You were slow coming through the back," he said.
"I wasn't."
"You were."
"I was waiting for him to say something stupid first. It's more satisfying."
"Woman, you almost got me shot for theater."
She turned her head. The look she gave him was the look she gave him — the one that was only his, that nobody who ever met her in a saloon or a courtroom or across a poker table had ever seen. Tired. Cracked open. Wanting.
"I'm sorry," she said, and meant it about something else.
He took her wrist and pulled her off the post and walked her back into the cabin and past Ketch slumped snoring against his ropes and through the curtain into the second room where there was a narrow bed and a washstand and a single window with the shutter half-drawn. He shut the curtain. He pulled the shutter the rest of the way closed. The room went dim and red with the last of the sun coming through the slats.
"He'll hear," she said.
"Let him."
"Dave."
"Let him hear, Sam. I don't care. I have not cared about one thing all day except getting you somewhere with a door."
She laughed — one breath of it, the startled kind — and then he had her against the wall and her hat was on the floor and his mouth was on hers and the laugh went out of her like somebody had blown out a lamp.
He kissed her the way he'd been wanting to kiss her since the wash that morning, since she'd knelt beside the creek and splashed her neck and he'd watched the water run down under her collar. He kissed her with his whole hand on her jaw, thumb against the hinge of it, tipping her face where he wanted it. She made a small sound into his mouth and he caught it and kept it.
"Off," he said, and tugged at her belt. "Off, off —"
"You off," she said, breathless, already working the buttons of his shirt, "you first, you —"
They got rid of what was necessary. Not more. His belt hanging open. Her trousers shoved down around her boots because neither of them had the patience for the boots. Her shirt open to the waist and her breasts bare to the dim red light and his mouth on them before she'd finished the last button. He sucked a nipple into his mouth and she arched off the wall with a noise low in her throat and grabbed the back of his head and held him there.
"Quiet," he said against her skin. "Quiet, sweetheart."
"You told him to listen."
"I changed my mind."
He dropped. Went to his knees on the rough plank floor and put his mouth on her cunt before she'd drawn breath to protest and she didn't protest, she went stiff against the wall and then soft, and her hand came down into the back of his collar and fisted.
She was already wet. She'd been wet since the porch, maybe since the ride in, he didn't know and didn't ask. He licked up into her slow and then not slow, flat of his tongue, point of it, working her clit in the way he knew, the way four years had taught him, while her thighs started to shake against his ears.
"Dave — Dave, honey —"
Virginia, he heard himself think, the way she said it when she was gone. He hooked one of her knees over his shoulder and opened her up and went at her. Her boot dragged against his back. Her fingers clawed at his scalp where there was nothing to claw. She was trying so hard to be quiet and failing in small beautiful ways — a hitched breath, a bitten-off word, a thin high sound at the back of her throat when he sucked on her clit and held it.
"I'm — Dave, I'm —"
He pushed two fingers up into her and curled them and she came on his mouth with a sound like a wounded thing, and her thigh shook against his jaw, and she pulled his hair that wasn't there, and he kept his tongue on her through it, easing her, gentling her, until she was soft and wet and leaning on the wall with her head thrown back and her chest heaving.
He stood up. Wiped his mouth on the back of his wrist. She watched him do it with her eyes half-closed and her mouth open and one hand still braced on the wall like she couldn't trust her legs.
"Turn around," he said.
She turned around.
He put one hand flat between her shoulder blades and bent her forward against the wall. He used the other to open his trousers and push them down his thighs. His cock was so hard it hurt. He ran the head of it through her, slow, soaking it, and she pushed back at him and hissed a word that wasn't a word.
"Shh."
"Put it in me."
"I will."
"Dave."
He put his hand over her mouth and pushed into her in one long steady shove and her cry went into his palm and he felt it all the way up his arm. He stopped when he was seated. Her cunt was fluttering around him from coming. Her forehead was against the wall. Her breath was coming hot and fast against his fingers.
"Quiet now," he said against her ear. "Quiet, sweetheart. There's a man on the other side of that curtain."
She nodded under his hand. Her eyes were wet.
He started to move.
He fucked her slow at first — because they had the time now, because Ketch wasn't going anywhere, because every slow stroke pulled a different shape of sound out of her and he wanted all of them. The wet slap of it. The small swallowed noises she was making against his palm. The creak of the bad floorboard under his boot. He bent over her back and bit the muscle where her neck met her shoulder and she clenched on him so hard he saw stars.
"God — god, Sam —"
"Harder."
"Yeah."
"Harder, honey, please —"
He took his hand off her mouth long enough to get a fist in her hair and pull her head back and then he put the hand back and he fucked her harder, and she moaned into his palm, and the wall shook, and somewhere out in the other room Ketch groaned in his sleep or his stupor and neither of them cared. The light through the shutter slats had gone from red to violet. Sweat ran down Dave's spine under his open shirt. She was making the sounds she only ever made for him — the broken ones, the ones four years of friendship and nine months of this had taught him to recognize as the edge.
"You gonna come for me again," he said, low, against her ear.
She nodded, frantic, under his hand.
"Say it."
He let her mouth go. She gasped. "Yes — yes — please —"
He reached around and put two fingers on her clit and she came apart. She came with her whole body, thighs shaking, cunt gripping him in waves, and the sound she made was nothing he could have muffled anyway, and he didn't try. He fucked her through it, three, four more strokes, and then he pulled out and spent himself on the small of her back in hot shaking pulses, one hand braced on the wall beside her head, his forehead on the back of her neck, breathing like a man who'd run a mile.
For a long minute neither of them moved.
"Jesus," she said eventually, into the wall.
"Yeah."
"Jesus, Dave."
He reached over to the washstand and wet the rag and cleaned her off, careful, the way he always did, the Virginia in his hands now instead of his mouth. She let him. She leaned into him when he was done and he held her there with her back against his chest and his arms around her ribs and his chin on the top of her head, and they breathed.
"Six hundred dollars," she said finally.
"Mm."
"We could be in Tucson by Thursday."
"We could."
"Get a room with a real bed. Eat something that isn't jerky. Drink something that isn't creek water."
"There's a place does chocolate wine."
"Shut up."
"I'm serious. A lady told me."
She laughed against his arm. It was the laugh he'd been working toward all day, maybe all week, the one that said she'd set something heavy down for a minute.
Out in the other room Ketch coughed and muttered and went back to sleep.
Dave held her until the violet went out of the slats and the room went honest dark, and then he walked her to the narrow bed and they lay down in their half-open clothes with the Colt within reach, and she put her face in his neck, and he put his mouth against her hair, and somewhere a coyote started up on the ridge and was answered, and they slept.
The emergency vet's parking lot was almost empty by the time Sam came out, carrier in one hand, phone in the other, and she stood under the sodium light for a second before she saw Dave's truck idling in the far row. She hadn't told him to come. He'd seen the last update — they finally got him to go, I'm shaking, I can drive — and he'd been on I-10 inside of ten minutes anyway, which she registered now, dimly, as the kind of thing he did and didn't announce.
She walked over. He got out and took the carrier from her without a word, set it on the bench seat, and then just held her against his chest in the middle of the parking lot with the engine still running. She didn't cry. She'd been too tired to cry for about six hours. She just put her forehead in the dip under his collarbone and let her whole weight go into him and felt him absorb it like it was nothing, like it was what he was built for.
"Five hundred?" he said into her hair.
"Six-forty."
"Jesus."
"I know."
"You eat anything?"
"Oreos. In the car. On the way there."
He laughed, just a short exhale, and she felt it move through his chest against her cheek. "Okay. Get in."
At her house he carried the cat in. Simba, traumatized but emptied, slunk off to the hall closet to recover his dignity. The dogs did their frantic circuit. Christian's door was closed — a note on the fridge said Tucson till Monday, feed the fish, love you — and Sam read it twice and then leaned against the counter with both hands flat on the tile and closed her eyes.
"Shower," Dave said, behind her. "Then bed. I'll handle the dogs."
"I haven't—"
"I know. Shower."
She went. She stood under the water for a long time and let it beat on the back of her neck and thought about nothing. When she came out in a towel he was sitting on the edge of her bed scrolling his phone with his boots off, and he looked up at her and his face did a thing she knew — that small recalibration, the way his eyes went slower.
"Don't," she said.
"Don't what."
"Don't look at me like that. I smell like iodine and I've been up since four."
"You smell like your shampoo."
"Dave."
"I'm just looking."
She crossed to him and stood between his knees and he put his hands on the backs of her thighs, under the towel, and just held her there. Not moving. His palms were warm and dry and very still, which was worse, somehow, than if he'd done anything. She felt her pulse move into her skin where he was touching her.
"I'm so tired," she said.
"I know."
"I don't think I can—"
"You don't have to do anything."
"That's not what I mean."
His thumbs moved, barely, along the crease where her legs met her ass. "What do you mean."
She looked down at him. His head was tilted back to see her, his jaw clean, the good strong line of his throat. Four years of this man and she still lost seconds looking at him.
"I mean I want you to," she said. "I just don't have anything to give."
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"Lie down."
She did. He took the towel off her and dropped it on the floor and pulled the sheet up over her waist like he was putting her to bed, which he was, and then he kissed her forehead, and her temple, and the soft hinge of her jaw, and her mouth, slow, once, with no tongue, and she made a sound in the back of her throat that she hadn't meant to make.
"Shh," he said.
He got undressed standing beside the bed. She watched. Shirt over the head, belt, jeans, the whole economical sequence, nothing performed about it. His cock was already half-hard when he pushed his briefs down and she felt the low hot pull of it behind her navel, the involuntary clench, the way her body remembered before her mind could weigh in.
He got under the sheet with her and pulled her back against his chest and just held her. Big hand flat on her stomach. His cock pressed warm against the small of her back. He didn't move.
"Dave."
"Sleep if you want."
"You're hard."
"I'll live."
She laughed, tiny, and felt him smile into her shoulder. Then she reached back and closed her hand around him and he inhaled through his nose, slow, controlled, and she felt the whole length of him twitch against her palm.
"I thought," he said, voice gone low, "you didn't have anything to give."
"I changed my mind."
"Baby."
"Just. Let me. I want to feel you. I don't want to do anything. I just want you in me while I fall asleep."
He was quiet for a second. Then his hand slid down her stomach and between her legs and he didn't tease, didn't work her up, just pressed his middle finger flat against her clit and held it there while he kissed the side of her neck, and she was wetter than she'd have guessed, wet enough that when he dragged the finger down and pushed it into her it went in clean to the knuckle and she made a broken little sound.
"Yeah you do," he said. "You do have something."
"Shut up."
He pulled his hand back and she felt him line himself up, the wet tip of his cock against her from behind, and he pushed in slow — the whole long slide of it — and she felt every inch, felt herself open around him, felt the exact second he bottomed out and his hips pressed flush against her ass. He stopped there. She was shaking a little.
"Okay?" he said.
"Yeah."
"Say it."
"I'm okay. I'm good. Fuck, you're—"
"I know."
He didn't thrust. He just stayed inside her, one arm under her neck, the other wrapped around her ribs with his palm cupped over her breast, thumb tracing her nipple lazy and endless, and his mouth at the back of her neck. Every few seconds his hips made the smallest motion, a fractional grind, less than an inch, enough to press the head of him against something deep inside her that made her eyes close and her mouth fall open.
"This is what you wanted?" he said.
"Yeah."
"Yeah?"
"Mm."
"You gonna fall asleep on my cock, baby?"
"Maybe."
He laughed, soft, and she felt it pulse through him, through her, and she pushed back against him without meaning to, and he made a low sound and his hand moved from her breast down her stomach and between her legs again, two fingers on her clit now, slow circles, the exact pressure, and she realized he was going to make her come like this, barely moving, and she was going to let him.
"Don't stop," she said. Then: "Don't speed up either."
"I know how to fuck you, Sam."
"I'm reminding you."
"Bossy."
"Always."
His fingers kept their pace. His cock stayed buried in her, barely moving, just that small grinding pressure every few seconds like a pulse, and she started to feel it build in this strange slow way, not a peak but a rising tide, and she turned her face into the pillow and breathed through her mouth and he felt her tightening and he said, right against her ear —
"Yeah. There. Just like that. Don't do anything. I've got you."
She came with her whole body going loose instead of tight, a long shuddering exhale, wet and soft and endless, her cunt clenching around him in slow waves and her thighs trembling and a sound coming out of her that wasn't a moan, was something quieter, more private, the sound she only made when she was too tired to edit it. He held absolutely still through it. His fingers didn't stop until she put her hand on his wrist.
"Dave."
"Yeah."
"Your turn."
"I'm good."
"Liar."
"I'm not gonna—"
"Come in me."
"Sam."
"I'm serious. I want to fall asleep full of you. Just — go. You don't have to be polite."
He made a sound, broken, into her shoulder, and then his hips finally moved — short hard strokes, shallow, grinding the full length of him into her from behind, and she felt him swell inside her and his whole body go rigid and his arm clamp tight across her ribs and he came with his face pressed into the back of her neck, a guttural quiet sound, and she felt it — the heat of it, the actual pulse of him spilling into her — and she reached back and held the back of his head and said good, baby, good, there you go like he'd said to her, and his breathing broke apart against her skin.
He didn't pull out. He stayed in her, softening slowly, and his hand slid up from her stomach and settled back over her heart, and she put her hand over his, and the room was very quiet except for the dogs resettling down the hall and the AC kicking on and the small wet sounds of them still pressed together.
"Hey," she said, eventually.
"Hey."
"Thank you for coming."
"You're welcome."
"I didn't ask you to."
"I know."
"I'm glad you did."
"I know."
She felt him start to slip out of her and she made a small protesting sound and he said shh, I'm not going anywhere, and he reached down and pulled the sheet up over both of them and tucked it around her shoulder. She could feel the wetness between her thighs, his and hers mixed, leaking onto the sheet, and she didn't care. Tomorrow problem.
"Simba's okay," he said.
"Simba's okay."
"You're okay."
"I'm okay."
"Chocolate wine still in the fridge?"
She laughed into the pillow. "You remembered that?"
"I remember everything you tell me."
"It's disgusting."
"We'll try it tomorrow."
"Okay."
He kissed her shoulder. She was already most of the way gone. She thought about the voice message she hadn't sent him tonight, the one she'd been composing in her head in the vet's waiting room — I love this, I love you, I don't know what I'd do — and she realized she didn't need to send it. He was here. He'd driven six hours because her cat couldn't shit. He was still inside her. The message was delivered.
"Dave."
"Mm."
"Don't leave before I wake up."
"I won't."
"Promise."
"Promise."
She slept.
