[2026-04-02 06:07:00] Dave: Audio Message.caf Transcription: Good morning sunshine I hope you slept well. I hope you wake up easy and have a nice drive to work. Hope your cereal is good and the milk's nice and cold and fresh. And I slept really well and you know what I just realize something Completely random, I guess I when I started doing voice messages. It took me a while to like get the hang of it and I was I would like. Have to start over a couple times usually to get it before I got going for the first little while and I just realized that I hadn't done that in like forever months and because I did just delete one because I was just completely coherent And couldn't say like I got like 10 words out It was like a bit long already so I did delete that one to start over. That's like well I. Delete A message because of complete reincarnation So yeah, anyway that's interesting Oh God, thank God it's Thursday my God 12 more days to go for the week We still feel so long it's four days I cannot wait to see you going to sleep thinking about you. Woke up thinking about you and thought about you all day yesterday and every day before it think about you all day today I'm sure. God, you are so sexy I cannot even imagine. I just can't get you off my mind. Now, now all I can think about sorry I know that was yesterday, but that's it So Work Six things with you that's that's all I got Oh God, I love you, sweetheart. I will talk to you later. I can't wait to hear your voice bye.

[2026-04-02 08:23:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-02 09:00:00] Dave: Like I said, you can’t undo YEARS of training in night
[2026-04-02 09:00:00] Dave: Bro
[2026-04-02 09:01:00] Dave: But thank you for trying! I’m proud of you! It’s a great start, and you’re great!
[2026-04-02 09:13:00] Sam Willis: Transcription: You are so funny and so adorable I think you said work and just sex in with you and that's all I got Oh geez, it's so funny. You bring up the recording of the voice messages because I'm the same way where I typically don't restart them or having it in a long time but earlier this week I do the exact same thing I had to just I had to just delete it because I I just. Just like completely went brain dead and sat there in silence for what felt like fucking forever and like I just literally could not think of one word and I just was like OK I gotta start over. What the fuck was that? But yeah, it's normally I'm just like else so yeah Let's see let's see let's see so glad today's last day in the office. I'm getting a massage tonight. I'm very excited about that. Maybe I'll watch some murder. When I get home. It's gonna be great. I am working from home next Monday because Layla has surgery on her teeth so That means I'm gonna have to go in next Friday, which is like very sad but thing getting me through is that I will then be seeing you on that Sunday and I'll have that Monday and Tuesday off so it'll be OK. I'll make it work. It'll be great all good hopefully I really gotta figure out. I know you explained why this is the thing but like why I cough and hack so much. In the morning, it's freaking bad also random thought, but are you into reptiles like are you like a snake guy? Thinking about it I'll have to tell you more about my murder podcast. I was listening to this morning. Oh yeah, which reminds me. I should've been listening to your getting work done getting things done whatever thing you fucking sent me to read. One of these days maybe maybe I'll do it as I'm cleaning the house this weekend or something have my AirPods and some AirPod earbuds air Why can't I think I don't know also because I left so fucking late I have my stupid daily standup and a stupid few minutes and then I have a stupid digital after that and I'm not even gonna be able to enjoy voice messaging you or listening to my music Fucking call the Entire Fucking Dr., AnyWho I did sleep decently anyway though despite my stupid latency, but the dogs woke me up at 4:30 and I was like no like I'll let you guys out but then I'm going back to bed. There's no way I'm getting ready for work at 4:30 in the morning so that's what I did and hence why I slept till six so yeah. OK, I'm really rambling about nothing at all that matters I feel like there's more random shit. I want to say, but I will figure it out later. I'm sure hope you're having so much fun at work.
[2026-04-02 09:34:00] Dave: EEEEEE!!! Seeing you
[2026-04-02 09:35:00] Dave: It’s because all the shit settles in your throat/sinuses and the processes to clear it all out slow down because you’re asleep
[2026-04-02 09:35:00] Sam Willis: I knowwwww but it’s annoying!
[2026-04-02 09:35:00] Dave: ewwwwe meetings
[2026-04-02 09:35:00] Sam Willis: Transcription: Oh one of the other things I was gonna tell you is I was messaging Chris Foy yesterday about something and then he was like where is this announcement? I'm like I know and he's like I really think it's Steven and I'm like why do you think that and he said he's been more optimistic lately and acting more alpha and I just thought that was fucking funny. I get what he's saying though he is. Acting bored like in charge and command tech stuff but anyway, Steven and Alpha just kind of makes me wanna throw the fuck up
[2026-04-02 09:35:00] Sam Willis: I knowwwww but it’s annoying!
[2026-04-02 09:37:00] Dave: And no I’m not a reptile-guy. Gross. And dumb. They literally don’t have the part of brains that produce emotion or attachment.
[2026-04-02 09:37:00] Dave: They’re cool to look at at the zoo or whatever, but not for pets
[2026-04-02 09:37:00] Sam Willis: They are fugly
[2026-04-02 09:38:00] Dave: And Stephen being alpha 🤣… I should fucking hockey shoulder check him into the wall out of nowhere next time I pass him in the hall lololol
[2026-04-02 09:40:00] Sam Willis: Transcription: OK two random things were quick one. What were you in high school? Like what click were you part of where you a job were you a punk where you Gothic were you? Preppy like like what like what I'm asking because I'm listening to Third Eye Blind which is just like such a throwback and it just feels so like you know 90s in 2000 and so it made me think high school so that was one and then two of the reptile comment this fucking Dude in Pittsburgh back in like the 90s they he had a row house which I can't remember exactly what they look like but like you know, this is all houses in a row and they were like attached to whatever anyway and he was in. He was a piece of shit, psycho man, and then his neighbor was just like lovely woman. His house was in total disrepair. Her house was amazing. They were fighting over the fact's house was a piece of shit, and it was like really tearing down the value of God I've gotta go, but anyway and long story short he dug a hole in the basement connecting his basement to her basement so we can sneak inside and killer and then all in his house and then his basement were caged up reptile. Some of them were dead. Some of them were alive, but there was a 7 foot long python in the kitchen sink or bathroom Fucking disgusting this guy was a freak, but he birds and lizards and shit
[2026-04-02 09:41:00] Sam Willis: This would be amazing
[2026-04-02 09:41:00] Sam Willis: This would be amazing
[2026-04-02 09:42:00] Dave: LMAAAAAAOO how you sped up at the end was great!!
[2026-04-02 09:46:00] Dave: I was kind of neutral in HS. I worked all the time once I tuned 16 so I never really had time for much of a special identity. Outside of a small group of just… normal?.. friends I guess I mostly fell in with the redneck crowd but I didn’t wear cowboy boots and shit to like, play it up. I never really latched onto an identity.
[2026-04-02 09:48:00] Sam Willis: I feel like I was the same
[2026-04-02 09:48:00] Sam Willis: A floater lol
[2026-04-02 09:49:00] Sam Willis: Well I went from preppy to like the preppy but fun/party group lol
[2026-04-02 10:02:00] Sam Willis: Look what I brought for a snack. Hehehe
[2026-04-02 10:02:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-02 10:03:00] Dave: Hehehe yum!!
[2026-04-02 10:03:00] Dave: Look what I brought….
[2026-04-02 10:03:00] Sam Willis: You suck!
[2026-04-02 10:04:00] Dave: Got some of these shits too ofc
[2026-04-02 10:04:00] Sam Willis: I have a granola bar from Costco
[2026-04-02 10:04:00] Sam Willis: Never had either of those brands
[2026-04-02 10:04:00] Sam Willis: I like cliff bars
[2026-04-02 10:05:00] Dave: Builder bars the best tasting protein bars I’ve ever found.
[2026-04-02 10:05:00] Sam Willis: Better than cliff!?!
[2026-04-02 10:05:00] Sam Willis: Noooo
[2026-04-02 10:06:00] Dave: Builder bars are. And regular cliff bars aren’t protein bars. They’re carbohydrate bars
[2026-04-02 10:06:00] Sam Willis: You shut your mouth
[2026-04-02 10:06:00] Dave: Uhhh
[2026-04-02 10:07:00] Dave: Not sure what problem is..,
[2026-04-02 10:07:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-02 10:07:00] Sam Willis: 10 whole grams of protein
[2026-04-02 10:07:00] Dave: Meh
[2026-04-02 10:08:00] Sam Willis: I do see now how Builders has more. Also had no idea they were the same company lol
[2026-04-02 10:08:00] Dave: 46 whole grams of carbs
[2026-04-02 10:08:00] Dave: Iirc
[2026-04-02 10:08:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-02 10:08:00] Sam Willis: 43. Boom. You’re wrong

[2026-04-02 10:09:00] Dave: Don’t be transphobic
[2026-04-02 10:11:00] Sam Willis: Lmfao
[2026-04-02 10:17:00] Sam Willis: My friend just asked: What’s better: cancelled meeting or cancelled plans?
[2026-04-02 10:17:00] Sam Willis: Now that’s hardddd
[2026-04-02 10:26:00] Dave: Meeting.
[2026-04-02 10:26:00] Dave: If you had plans, it’s something you at least wanted to do at some point

[2026-04-02 10:56:00] Sam Willis: You can guess who the boomer is lol
[2026-04-02 10:56:00] Dave: Who’s a boomer on your team
[2026-04-02 10:56:00] Sam Willis: But he’s not funny, always joking about me firing him
[2026-04-02 10:57:00] Sam Willis: And then every time I have a call with him, he says “saaaaaaam” in a whiny voice and I am so honestly triggered

[2026-04-02 12:06:00] Dave: BROOO! I’ve been saying exactly this for yeeeears
[2026-04-02 12:06:00] Dave: It’s why republicans are so on board with it.
[2026-04-02 12:06:00] Dave: BROOO! I’ve been saying exactly this for yeeeears
[2026-04-02 12:06:00] Dave: It’s why republicans are so on board with it.
[2026-04-02 12:07:00] Dave: It’s an easy gateway to anti-intellectualism, and that’s exactly what they want - so people still vote for them even though they’re working directly against their own interstate

[2026-04-02 12:13:00] Sam Willis: I fucking knew it
[2026-04-02 12:16:00] Sam Willis: TBH he might be a better cultural fit than Samir
[2026-04-02 12:18:00] Dave: Yeah probably. But I’m curious to see an outside perspective
[2026-04-02 12:24:00] Sam Willis: Transcription: Wait, that's what I meant. I meant Samir is a better cultural fit than Stephen. I just typed the name wrong because I am all over the place so much for me getting work done. There's a lot There's a lot that's gonna change there's a lot that's gonna change. I think we're gonna get quite a few TRM people that are gonna go to STS. There are three big open positions right now for Indies and then also. Puzzles leaving who's in a risk MD role over an FCRM So Yeah
[2026-04-02 12:24:00] Dave: Ohhh… you think Samir is a better fit?
[2026-04-02 12:25:00] Sam Willis: From a culture perspective, likely. Stephen is a fucking robot
[2026-04-02 12:25:00] Sam Willis: Samir has a sense of humor

[2026-04-02 13:35:00] Dave: Stupid time 🙄
[2026-04-02 13:39:00] Sam Willis: I’m gonna need the D like right away. You can tease me another time
[2026-04-02 13:39:00] Sam Willis: 😂😂
[2026-04-02 13:39:00] Dave: Yeah we’ll see
[2026-04-02 13:40:00] Sam Willis: I’m not even kidding. Don’t you deny me!!!
[2026-04-02 13:40:00] Dave: Then it wouldn’t be teasing would it?
[2026-04-02 13:40:00] Sam Willis: 😡
[2026-04-02 13:40:00] Dave: 😘
[2026-04-02 13:41:00] Sam Willis: I can close my legs and deny you access entirely
[2026-04-02 13:41:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-02 13:43:00] Dave: <no text>
[2026-04-02 13:43:00] Dave:
[2026-04-02 15:38:00] Sam Willis: Do you ever meet with an advisor in the employee branch? Highly recommend if you don’t
[2026-04-02 15:38:00] Sam Willis: Best meeting of the year lol
[2026-04-02 15:38:00] Dave: No
[2026-04-02 15:38:00] Dave: Why?
[2026-04-02 15:39:00] Sam Willis: Bc you get a sense of when you can actually retire and with how much money you can still have each month and they have tips for maximizing the benefits Schwab offers.
[2026-04-02 15:40:00] Sam Willis: I can comfortably retire at 58.5 and live until I’m 93. But I would looveeee to work towards retiring at 55. LET’S GOOOOOO
[2026-04-02 15:40:00] Sam Willis: hell 50 would even be amazing lol
[2026-04-02 15:40:00] Dave: Nice!
[2026-04-02 15:42:00] Sam Willis: Schedule an appointment
[2026-04-02 15:42:00] Sam Willis: You’ll be happy you did. I’ll send you the link
[2026-04-02 15:42:00] Dave: I’m pretty sure I would not be happy I did 😩
[2026-04-02 15:43:00] Dave: I can’t imagine I’ll ever be able to retire lol
[2026-04-02 15:43:00] Sam Willis: Oh please
[2026-04-02 15:43:00] Sam Willis: Wouldn’t you rather know or have some idea. Yes. The answer is yes. Knowledge is power 😂
[2026-04-02 15:44:00] Sam Willis: Also, guaranteed you’re leaving money on the table right now that you don’t even know about
[2026-04-02 15:44:00] Dave: I have an idea. And unfortunately, it’s what I said before.
[2026-04-02 16:26:00] Sam Willis: How has your day been? No more going into the office this week!!
[2026-04-02 16:45:00] Dave: It was alright
[2026-04-02 16:46:00] Dave: I got some shit done
[2026-04-02 16:46:00] Sam Willis: I got fuck all done
[2026-04-02 16:47:00] Dave: I just dropped Greyson off at his friend’s house so now I have to wade through 45 minutes of traffic to get the 8 miles home 🙄
[2026-04-02 16:47:00] Sam Willis: Ugh that sucks
[2026-04-02 16:47:00] Dave: I guessthey’re out of school tomorrow
[2026-04-02 16:47:00] Sam Willis: Good Friday
[2026-04-02 16:47:00] Dave: Oh
[2026-04-02 16:48:00] Dave: Are we off tomorrow
[2026-04-02 16:48:00] Sam Willis: We get early release tomorrow allegedly. A couple hrs
[2026-04-02 16:48:00] Sam Willis: Stephen told his people anyway
[2026-04-02 16:49:00] Dave: Meh. I don’t work Friday afternoons anyway
[2026-04-02 16:50:00] Sam Willis: lol
[2026-04-02 17:01:00] Sam Willis: Things go ok in therapy today?
[2026-04-02 17:29:00] Dave: Yeah, I… think lol
[2026-04-02 17:30:00] Dave: We’re kind of all over the place lol
[2026-04-02 17:31:00] Sam Willis: She’s probably trying to crack your code lol
[2026-04-02 17:32:00] Sam Willis: Any ah ha moments though or good little nuggets for you?
[2026-04-02 17:35:00] Dave: Yeah she s having a problem figuring out why I want out of this. Or what she can even do…
[2026-04-02 17:38:00] Dave: We talk about everything I’m unhappy with about the kids and with Juliet, and how much I love you and want to be with you.
[2026-04-02 17:39:00] Dave: She isn’t a big fan of affairs lol.
[2026-04-02 17:43:00] Dave: She has pretty much stopped talking about that. Today we talked about how I can deal with Disney lol
[2026-04-02 17:45:00] Dave: No, no ah ha moments. We also talked about how I can deal with the kids better.
[2026-04-02 17:46:00] Dave: Today she was like: look, you’re obviously not changing your mind about continuing to see Sam, so let’s talk about something else.
[2026-04-02 17:51:00] Dave: How was your day?
[2026-04-02 17:55:00] Sam Willis: Did you just buy it?
[2026-04-02 17:55:00] Sam Willis: Did you just buy it?
[2026-04-02 17:56:00] Sam Willis: What was her advice on Disney?
[2026-04-02 17:57:00] Sam Willis: I think with the affair, it’s what you and I have talked about before. She likely thinks that if you put half the energy into your family as you do with me, then you might feel differently. But I’m a distraction and until I’m out of the picture, it won’t get better.
[2026-04-02 17:58:00] Dave: Hahaha, no. It just reminded me of you 🤪
[2026-04-02 17:58:00] Dave: Hahaha, no. It just reminded me of you
[2026-04-02 18:02:00] Sam Willis: Not that great lol but not terrible. Just anxious about upcoming work changes with ppl moving jobs. I didn’t eat lunch so I was starving. But I’m very very excited for my massage and that tomorrow is Friday. Christian finally told his therapist that we broke up. She’s the only one in his circle who knows. The good thing though is that she told him exactly what I told him about him buying a house and needing the job history. But she told him the same about even renting. So he started reaching out about a couple rentals today.

[2026-04-02 18:03:00] Dave: She uses the cocaine analogy. You’re the cocaine. So obviously my stupid family is going to suck compared to COCAAAAINE. But then I’m like: but it sucked before I ever started doing cocaine. And I don’t have any desire to make it better. Like, I literally don’t like these people!! What don’t you get about that. So then she’s like 🤔🤨🤨🤨

[2026-04-02 18:03:00] Sam Willis: However, I also learned today that he’s on a PIP! Soooooo
[2026-04-02 18:03:00] Sam Willis: I fucking knew it.
[2026-04-02 18:04:00] Dave: What’s that?
[2026-04-02 18:04:00] Sam Willis: You don’t have an HR investigation and not get on something
[2026-04-02 18:04:00] Dave: Oh dang
[2026-04-02 18:04:00] Sam Willis: An official performance improvement plan. Basically the first step of documentation so they can fire you.
[2026-04-02 18:04:00] Dave: Yeah. That sucks.
[2026-04-02 18:05:00] Dave: Have you considered just keeping him as a roommate lol?
[2026-04-02 18:05:00] Sam Willis: Why would I do that
[2026-04-02 18:05:00] Sam Willis: Why would I do that
[2026-04-02 18:07:00] Sam Willis: I just reallllyyyy hope he finds a new job soon.
[2026-04-02 18:07:00] Sam Willis: Yet the kids continue to live here too?
[2026-04-02 18:08:00] Sam Willis: And also I have not had a roommate since my sophomore year in college. I don’t do roommates. Fucking gross lol
[2026-04-02 18:08:00] Sam Willis: I’m not going to kick him on the streets though if he loses his job. Ugh
[2026-04-02 18:08:00] Sam Willis: I’m going to help him with his resume this weekend. He has not asked but I want to anyway
[2026-04-02 18:09:00] Sam Willis: I also found out he got put on the PIP right before I broke up with him so that’s lovely
[2026-04-02 18:09:00] Dave: Right so you don’t want a roommate but you’d rather keep sleeping in the same bed and sharing a bathroom lol?
[2026-04-02 18:10:00] Dave: Didn’t you say you were shooting for the end of April?
[2026-04-02 18:13:00] Dave: You could create more separation without kicking him out on the streets. And also still have people in the house so you don’t get lonely. Plus have a dog sitter.
[2026-04-02 18:13:00] Sam Willis: Yes so hopefully he finds a place this month
[2026-04-02 18:14:00] Sam Willis: This is an absolute last resort and not something I’m even going to offer unless its like June
[2026-04-02 18:14:00] Dave: Just a thought, if the worst happen and he gets fired or doesn’t/can’t get a place
[2026-04-02 18:14:00] Sam Willis: This is an absolute last resort and not something I’m even going to offer unless its like June
[2026-04-02 18:14:00] Dave: So the real time frame is June?
[2026-04-02 18:22:00] Sam Willis: <no text>
[2026-04-02 18:23:00] Dave: Whooooa!!
[2026-04-02 18:23:00] Dave: You’re so flushed 🥵

[2026-04-02 18:23:00] Dave: And sexy af omg 🥵
[2026-04-02 18:25:00] Dave: I can’t believe I get to make love with that in 9 days, 18 hours 😍👸
[2026-04-02 18:25:00] Sam Willis: Are you still feeling ok about WAA?
[2026-04-02 18:25:00] Sam Willis: With the perspective you’re getting about it from the therapist?
[2026-04-02 18:26:00] Dave: I’m feeling great about WAA, and love you as much as ever 😘
[2026-04-02 18:27:00] Dave: I’m honestly not getting any perspective lol. It’s nothing you and I haven’t already talked about multiple times.
[2026-04-02 18:27:00] Dave: Which I think is why we’re moving on to other things.
[2026-04-02 18:27:00] Dave: I’m honestly not getting any perspective lol. It’s nothing you and I haven’t already talked about multiple times.

[2026-04-02 18:29:00] Sam Willis: He started this process today. So we will see.
[2026-04-02 18:29:00] Sam Willis: He started this process today. So we will see.
[2026-04-02 18:29:00] Dave: Oh really
[2026-04-02 18:29:00] Sam Willis: By finding a place and reaching out to see it.

[2026-04-02 21:13:00] Dave: I hate waiting in lines for hours I hate being fucking shoulder to shoulder with people EVERYWHERE I hate being an hour+ and 2 train ridges away from my hotel room I don’t like being around the people I’m going with She basically told me I should find a way to enjoy it… bitch have you not listened to a word I’ve said? 🤨 So she told me about how she used to hate standing in lines until one day she decided “if I have to stand in lines, I’m going to find a way to enjoy it”… “so now, I love standing in lines, I’ll bring a book, or.. oh! You know that game heads up where hold your phone up to your forehead and people give you clues and you have to guess what it says?!?”. She literally trailed off at the end because she could read on my face that I’m not a fucking “heads up” kind of guy - before I was like 😩😩😩😩 that’s the woooorst thing ever and THAT’S WHAT THESE MOTHER FUCKERS ARE PLANNING ON DOING THE WHOLE TIME

[2026-04-02 21:15:00] Dave: So then she said: do you like podcasts?… maybe you can listen to podcasts while everyone else plays heads up
[2026-04-02 21:16:00] Sam Willis: That’s a thought. But would Juliet want you to not be “present” with them?

[2026-04-02 21:17:00] Dave: I was thinking: bitch, people PAY you for this?!
[2026-04-02 21:17:00] Sam Willis: Oof
[2026-04-02 21:17:00] Sam Willis: OK so not a good therapy session today 😅
[2026-04-02 21:18:00] Dave: But yeah, she framed it as a concession for me to be able to make it through the trip without committing murders
[2026-04-02 21:18:00] Dave: But yeah, she framed it as a concession for me to be able to make it through the trip without committing murders

[2026-04-02 21:19:00] Dave: Apparently Gaylen fucking loves it
[2026-04-02 21:19:00] Dave: No it was ok. You know me and my hyperbole lol 🙄
[2026-04-02 21:24:00] Dave: Oh lol… at one point she said: maybe you could arrange to like, take… no, you’d just go text Sam about how much it sucked.
[2026-04-02 21:25:00] Sam Willis: LOLOL
[2026-04-02 21:26:00] Sam Willis: god damnit Dave. SHE HATES ME
[2026-04-02 21:26:00] Edited 1 minute, 34 seconds later: The idea being that she wants me to use different words, or think about it in a different way than: “this is going to eat ass”.: Try to find little ways to improve the situation rather than dwell on how much it sucks
[2026-04-02 21:28:00] Dave: Guess what babydoll
[2026-04-02 21:28:00] Dave: I’m going my ass to bed!
[2026-04-02 21:28:00] Dave: Did you ever change your flight?
[2026-04-02 21:29:00] Sam Willis: No I’m the worst. This weekend ok!
[2026-04-02 21:29:00] Dave: I love you sweetheart 😘
[2026-04-02 21:29:00] Dave: And I can’t wait to see you
[2026-04-02 21:29:00] Sam Willis: No I’m the worst. This weekend ok!
[2026-04-02 21:29:00] Sam Willis: Good night baby!!!
[2026-04-02 21:31:00] Sam Willis: I love you ❤️😘
Nine days out, and he was already inside her head.
Sam had just gotten home from the massage, muscles loosened into something that felt more like warm bread than body, when her phone buzzed on the bathroom counter. She was wrapped in a towel, hair wet, eucalyptus oil still sharp in her sinuses. Dave's name. A voice message.
She didn't play it immediately. She knew better by now. She sat on the edge of the tub, water beading on her collarbones, and pressed the little triangle.
"Hi, baby." His voice, unhurried, that Virginia slowness she could pick out in a crowded room. "I want you to do something for me tonight. Don't play with yourself. Not once. I know you're gonna want to, after that massage — you always do — and I know you've been thinking about what I said this morning. About your hands. I've been thinking about it too." A pause. She could hear him breathing. "I want you wound up. I want you to lie in your bed tonight and feel exactly how much you want me and not do a goddamn thing about it. Tell me you heard me."
She played it again. Then a third time. Then she typed with her thumb, still one-handed in her towel: heard you.
The phone buzzed almost instantly. Good girl. Nine days.
She laughed out loud in the empty bathroom, a sound that was half disbelief and half something more desperate. Nine days. He'd handed her a sentence.
By the time she'd brushed her teeth and pulled on one of his old t-shirts — the soft gray one that had migrated across the country in her suitcase and never gone back — she was already half-wet just from the ghost of his voice. She climbed into bed. The sheets were cool. The ceiling fan turned lazy circles above her. Her thighs pressed together without her meaning to, and she made herself unclench them, made herself lie flat on her back with her arms at her sides, like a woman obeying something.
She called him.
"Hi." His voice filled her ear, low and close, and her whole body responded like he'd touched her. "You in bed?"
"Yeah."
"What are you wearing?"
"Your shirt."
"Hmm." A sound that lived somewhere between pleased and predatory. "Anything under it?"
"No."
"Lift it up. To your waist."
She did, her hand trembling faintly. The cotton bunched under her ribs. The air from the fan moved over her bare stomach, her bare cunt, and she exhaled so hard the phone crackled.
"Don't touch yourself," he said. "I mean it, Sam. Hands flat. Palms down on the bed."
"Okay." Her voice was already thin.
"I want to tell you what I've been thinking about. Can I do that?"
"Please."
He took his time. He always did. That was the worst of it — that he could sound like he was describing a recipe, a long drive, the weather, while he was taking her apart.
"I keep coming back to your wrists," he said. "How small they are. I've been thinking about gathering them up behind your back, both of them in one of my hands, and holding you there. Not tight enough to hurt. Tight enough that you can't move. And your face pressed into the mattress so you can't see me. So all you can do is feel what I'm doing to you and listen."
Her hips twitched. She bit down on the inside of her cheek.
"Are your hands flat, baby?"
"Yes."
"Liar."
She laughed, shaky. "They're flat. I swear."
"Spread your legs."
She did. Slowly. The air hit her and she felt how wet she already was, slick pooling toward the sheet underneath her. He couldn't see. He didn't need to. He knew.
"Tell me."
"I'm soaked."
"Mm. From what?"
"From — from your voice. From what you said."
"What part."
"Holding my hands."
"Say it the way I said it."
She swallowed. "Both my wrists. In your hand. Behind my back."
"Good girl." He said it so quietly she felt it in her sternum. "Now stay still. Don't move your hips. Don't press your thighs together. I want to hear you breathe."
She breathed. She tried. Every exhale came out a little fractured. Her cunt was clenching on nothing and she could feel it, the emptiness, the specific aching shape of what she wanted him to fill. Her clit was throbbing so hard it had its own pulse, louder than her heart.
"You're shaking," he said. She hadn't realized she was.
"Dave—"
"I know."
"Please."
"I know, baby. Nine days."
"That's not — that's not a number, that's a sentence—"
"It's a countdown. You're gonna count it with me. Every night."
Her eyes were wet. Actually wet, not metaphorically, and she didn't fully understand why. Something about being seen this precisely at this distance. Something about being held in place without being touched. She wanted to close her thighs around her own hand and make it stop and she didn't, because he'd told her not to.
"Tell me what you want when I get there," he said.
"You."
"More specific."
"I want — I want to not be able to focus. I want you to not let me think."
"I'm not gonna let you think."
"I want—" She was crying a little now, without any distress in it, just overflow. "I want you to hold my hands behind my back and fuck me until I can't remember my own name."
"I will."
"The second you walk in."
"Baby." A soft laugh, fond. "You said the exact same thing this morning. The D right away. You're not gonna get teased at the door?"
"No. I'm gonna get teased for the next nine days. I'm getting teased right now."
"Yeah you are."
She made a sound — not a word, something lower and rougher — and her hips came up off the bed about two inches before she caught herself and flattened again, gasping.
"Did you move?"
"A little."
"Sam."
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I put it back."
"I believe you." A pause, weighted. "Do you want to come tonight?"
She went still. The whole room went still. The fan, the distant hum of her refrigerator, her own breath — everything held.
"I thought you said—"
"I'm asking."
She thought about it. She actually thought about it, which was its own surrender, the fact that he'd given her the question instead of just the answer. She could say yes. He'd walk her through it. She knew exactly how he'd do it — slow, specific, his voice in her ear while she touched herself, telling her when and how, making her beg for the last inch of it.
Or she could say no. She could lie here wound up and aching and full of him and not relieve any of it, and carry it into tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, and by the time he walked through her door she would be something incandescent, something barely human with wanting, and when he held her wrists and put her face down in the mattress she would come apart so hard it would feel like dying.
"No," she whispered. "Not tonight."
He made a small sound — surprised, pleased, a little undone himself. "Look at you."
"I want to be — I want to be exactly how you said. Wound up."
"Good girl. Jesus. Good girl."
"Talk to me until I fall asleep."
"I can do that." She heard him shift, get comfortable, the rustle of his pillow. "Put your shirt back down. Keep your hands where they are. Don't close your legs."
"Okay."
"I'm gonna tell you about the first time we kissed, and you're gonna listen, and you're not gonna touch anything, and when you fall asleep you're gonna dream about me. Deal?"
"Deal."
He talked. The cocaine analogy came up somewhere in the middle — his therapist's line, which he delivered with that dry self-amusement she loved, you're the cocaine, my family's never gonna compete with cocaine — and she laughed wetly into the phone and felt the laugh travel all the way down to where she was still throbbing. He talked about the way she'd looked at him the first real time, four years ago, in a hallway that had nothing to do with anything. He talked about her voice on voicemails when she had to start over three times. He talked about her hands, how small they were, how he could hold both of them in one of his without trying.
She drifted. Her body stayed tense, stayed hungry, but her mind went soft around the edges of his voice. Her hand — disobedient, half-asleep — crept toward her stomach and she caught it and put it back flat.
"You still with me?" he murmured.
"Mm."
"You touching?"
"No."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"Okay. Sleep, baby."
"Don't hang up."
"I won't."
She didn't remember falling asleep. She remembered his breathing. She remembered the fan. She remembered the particular ache between her legs that she had made a choice to carry, that he had made a choice to let her carry, and how that choice felt like being held.
In the morning she woke up to her phone dead on the pillow and a text waiting for her when she plugged it in: 8 days, 23 hours. How'd you sleep?
She stretched. Every muscle from the massage was still loose. Every muscle below her navel was tight as a fist. She could feel herself, slick and swollen, before she even moved. She didn't touch. She wouldn't. She was going to walk around like this for more than a week, aware of her own body the way a lit fuse is aware of itself, and when he finally came through her door she was going to put her hands behind her back before he asked and watch his face.
She typed back: didn't. wound up. ❤️
His reply came in a few seconds: good girl.
She pressed the phone to her chest and laughed, and then she got up and made coffee and went to work, carrying him under her clothes like a secret.
The vault door weighed three tons and closed like a promise you couldn't take back.
Sam heard the bolts seat in the frame and counted them the way she'd been trained to — four, five, six — while the overhead sodium lamp buzzed and the air in the depository went still and cold against the back of her neck. Above them, somewhere up the marble stair and past the brass grilles, the bank was closing for the weekend. Tellers cashing out. Guards punching clocks. A janitor wheeling a bucket across the lobby floor they'd just crossed with forged credentials and a stolen courier manifest.
Below them, they had forty-one hours alone with a safe deposit box numbered 1147.
"Clock's running," Dave said. He set the duffel on the steel table at the vault's center, unzipped it, and laid the tools out the way a surgeon lays out instruments. Stethoscope. Pick set. A borescope slimmer than a pencil. The drill was a last resort and they both knew it.
Sam shrugged out of her coat. The pencil skirt she'd worn upstairs — to play the lawyer, to smile at the assistant manager, to slide the falsified power of attorney across the desk — was still on, and she could feel Dave's eyes clock her when she bent to pull the jammer from the outside pocket. He didn't linger. He never did when the work was in front of them. But she felt it anyway, the way you feel a hand you haven't been touched by yet.
"Eyes on the box, Virginia," she said, deadpan, and flicked the jammer on.
"They are."
"They were on my ass."
"Both can be true."
She laughed once, low, and it echoed off the brass like a coin dropped. The vault was all mirror-polished steel and old American money — rows of numbered drawers stacked floor to ceiling, the smell of oiled tumblers and something older underneath, paper and leather and the dust of other people's secrets. 1147 was chest-height on the east wall. An older lock. A Diebold from before the war, the kind of mechanism their mark had chosen because he didn't trust anything with a circuit in it.
Dave fitted the stethoscope and leaned in. His bald head caught the lamp. Sam watched his hands — big, unhurried, the calluses along the pads of his fingers that she knew the feel of on her throat, on the inside of her thigh, at the small of her back when he walked her through a doorway — and she had to look away and remind herself that they were in a sealed room under a bank with two armed guards and a timer and the rest of her life riding on the next hour.
"Talk to me," he said quietly. Not a command. A thread for her to hold.
"East wall clear. Jammer's green. If the pressure plate under the floor is live we'll know in about six minutes because we'll be dead."
"Reassuring."
"You asked."
He smiled without turning. "Keep talking."
She talked. She told him the guard rotation she'd memorized upstairs, and the name of the assistant manager's dog because she'd charmed it out of him, and a story about her co-worker back in the life they were pretending not to have — the whiny one, the one whose voice went up at the end of every sentence like he was asking permission to exist — and Dave laughed silently into the stethoscope and the first wheel of the lock dropped with a click she felt in her molars.
"One," he said.
"Three to go."
"Come here."
She came. She stood at his shoulder and pressed her hip against his and watched his jaw as he listened, and when the second wheel dropped he turned his face just slightly and set his mouth against the bare skin below her ear, not kissing, just there, breathing her in, and her whole body went liquid between one heartbeat and the next.
"Don't," she whispered. "You'll make me stupid."
"Two," he said, and found the third wheel.
By the fourth she had one palm flat on the cold steel of the neighboring drawers to keep her knees. He worked the lever. The drawer slid out three inches and stopped, and he pulled it the rest of the way with both hands and there it was — the ledger, the bearer bonds, the thin wafer of encrypted drive they'd come eighteen hundred miles and burned two identities to reach.
Neither of them touched it.
Dave straightened. He turned, slow, and put one hand on the small of Sam's back and the other under her jaw, and she was already rising on her toes by the time his mouth found hers. The kiss wasn't soft. It was forty-one hours of a bank vault and four years of wanting and a job almost done, and she opened for him like a held breath finally let go. His tongue was in her mouth and his hand was in her hair and the pencil skirt was bunching up her thighs because he was walking her backward without letting go.
Her back hit the steel table. The tools rattled.
"Here?" she breathed against his mouth.
"Here."
"The cameras —"
"Jammer."
"The guards —"
"Two hours on the next rotation."
"Dave —"
"Sam." He pulled back just enough to look at her. The sodium light made his eyes gold. "Turn around."
She turned. She didn't think about it, didn't decide — the word hit the base of her spine and her body obeyed before the rest of her caught up. He put one broad hand flat between her shoulder blades and pressed her down until her cheek was against the cold steel of the table, and she heard herself make a sound that wasn't a word.
He pushed the skirt up to her waist. She heard the slide of it, the whisper of the lining. He hooked two fingers into the waistband of her hose and her underwear together and dragged them down to her thighs in one slow pull, and the air hit her cunt and she was already wet enough that she felt it, cool, immediate, obscene.
"Jesus," he said, soft, almost to himself. "Look at you."
"Hurry."
"No."
He found her with his fingers first. Two of them, sliding up through her, not inside, just parting her, feeling the shape of her, and she made a broken noise into the steel. Her hands were braced on the far edge of the table. He took her wrists, both of them, one at a time, and drew them behind her back and pinned them together against her spine with one of his, and the position — bent over, face down, hands caught at the small of her back, skirt shoved to her waist — hit her so hard she felt it behind her eyes.
"You said you wanted this," he murmured. His other hand was at his belt. She heard the buckle, the zipper, the rustle of wool. "You said figure out the positioning."
"I —"
"This is the positioning."
"Oh god."
He dragged the head of his cock through her. Slow. Once. Twice. She was shaking. She felt him notch against her hole and her whole body tried to push back and he held her still by the wrists and the weight of him and pushed in, one long slide, until his hips were flush against her ass and she couldn't breathe and didn't want to.
"Quiet," he said. "Guards."
She bit the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper.
He fucked her slow for the first dozen strokes. Deep and unhurried, his grip on her wrists absolute, his free hand splayed wide across her lower back. She could hear every sound her body made around him — the wet, filthy catch of it, the slap when he bottomed out, her own breath hissing through her teeth because she couldn't open her mouth, couldn't make noise, couldn't do anything but take him. The table was cold against her cheek and her tits through the blouse and her palms pressed together at the base of her spine were going hot under his hand.
"Tell me," he said.
"Harder."
"Tell me."
"Please — harder, Dave, please —"
He gave it to her. He let go of slow and drove into her and the table scraped an inch across the vault floor, the tools jumping, the stethoscope skidding to the edge, and she had to bite down on her own shoulder through the blouse to keep from screaming. He fucked her like they had forty-one hours and also like they had ninety seconds. He fucked her like he'd been counting days. He fucked her like she was the thing in the drawer and the ledger was a prop.
"Nine days," he said against the back of her neck, ragged, and she almost laughed and almost sobbed. "Eighteen hours. I couldn't wait."
"Don't — don't you dare — stop —"
"I'm not stopping."
"I'm going to —"
"Do it. Quiet. Do it on my cock."
She came with her face on the steel and her hands locked at her back and his hips driving her into the edge of the table. She came so hard her vision went white around the sodium lamp and she felt her cunt clamp down on him in waves she couldn't control, and she made a sound into her own shoulder that was muffled and ruined and he rode her through it with his forehead pressed between her shoulder blades.
He let go of her wrists. Her arms stayed where he'd put them for a second before she remembered they were hers. He gripped her hips with both hands and she finally arched up, finally took a breath, finally turned her head so he could see her face, and that's what did it — her eye on him, her mouth open, her cheek flushed against the steel — he pulled out and came across the small of her back in hot thick stripes, and she felt every one of them land.
The vault was silent except for their breathing.
He reached past her, unhurried, and pulled a clean handkerchief from the inside of his jacket — because he was Dave, because of course he had one — and wiped her clean with a tenderness that made her eyes sting. He drew her underwear up her thighs. He eased the skirt down. He turned her around and took her face in both hands and kissed her like the world had ended and left only them.
"Hi," she whispered.
"Hi."
"We have a safe deposit box to rob."
"I know."
"You made me stupid."
"I made you quiet," he said. "That's different."
She laughed into his mouth. She could feel the ghost of his grip on her wrists already bruising. She already loved it.
He turned back to the drawer. She fixed her blouse, smoothed her hair, and picked up the drive from inside the box with fingers that were almost steady. The ledger. The bonds. Everything they'd come for, slid neat into the duffel while the jammer blinked green and the sodium lamp buzzed and the bolts of the door stayed seated in their frame.
At the stair, at the door, at the edge of everything that came next, he looked at her once.
"Ready?"
"Lead the way, Virginia."
He did. The vault sealed behind them with a sound like a held breath, and they walked up out of the earth with a stolen fortune in a bag and the taste of each other still in their mouths, and nobody on the street above knew either of their names.
The massage therapist had hands like a sadist with a mortgage, and Sam left the spa feeling like a wrung-out dishtowel that had been tenderized and then blessed. It was nine-fifteen on a Thursday. Her hair was still damp at the nape from the hot towel. The parking lot smelled like eucalyptus and asphalt and somebody's cigarette two spaces over, and she sat in her car with the key in her lap and pulled up Dave's name before she'd fully decided to.
FaceTime?
The three dots came back immediately.
Yeah. Home?
Almost.
She drove the fifteen minutes with the windows cracked because her skin still felt too warm from the oil they'd used, that lavender stuff that made her think of Dave's sheets, which made her think of Dave's mouth, which made her think about how nine days and eighteen hours had become, by some mercy of the calendar, eight days and twenty-two. She counted it on her fingers at a red light like a child.
The apartment was cool and dark. She dropped her bag by the door, kicked her shoes somewhere near it, and went straight to the bedroom because her bed was the only place she wanted to be, and by extension, the closest she could get to him. She stripped out of the leggings she'd pulled on after the massage, left the oversized tee, climbed in under the duvet, and propped the phone against the extra pillow.
He picked up before the first ring finished.
"Hi, baby."
That voice. That unhurried Virginia voice that did something to her lower back even on a good day, and today her lower back had already been worked over by a professional, and now it was his turn to undo the rest.
"Hi," she said, and she could hear how her own voice had gone soft at the edges.
He was in bed too, lamp low, shoulders bare above the sheet. His jaw looked freshly shaved. He was looking at her the way he always looked at her — like he was cataloging her, like if the call dropped he'd want to remember exactly what she looked like right now.
"How was it?"
"She almost killed me. I love her."
"You look it. You're all — " he made a vague gesture at his own face, "melty."
"Melty." She laughed. "Thanks."
"I mean it as the highest compliment."
"Mm." She rolled onto her side, tucked her hand under her cheek. "Talk to me. Distract me from the fact that I can still feel her elbow in my shoulder blade."
He did. He told her about the therapy session, about the cocaine analogy, about how his therapist had said, with a perfectly straight face, that of course his family suffered by comparison — you're the cocaine, Sam — and Sam laughed hard enough that the massage-loose muscles in her stomach actually hurt.
"That is the best thing anyone has ever said about me."
"I told her, 'bitch, people pay you for this?'"
"People pay you for this," Sam said, grinning. "I would pay you. I'm paying attention, aren't I?"
"That's not the same thing."
"It is when I'm this horizontal."
His expression changed. Not much. A small thing around his eyes. But she knew his face the way other people know the back of their hand, and the small thing around his eyes meant the conversation had turned, even if his voice wouldn't catch up for another few seconds.
"You in bed?" he said, and the voice had caught up.
"Mhm."
"What are you wearing?"
"Oh my God," she said, laughing, "are we doing this? The line from a nineties movie?"
"Answer the question."
And there it was — not loud, not theatrical, just that quiet shift of gravity when he decided he wanted something. She felt it in her chest first, then lower, a warm slow pull.
"T-shirt," she said. "Nothing else."
"Take it off."
She sat up, pulled it over her head, tossed it. Lay back down. The sheet was at her waist. She left it there.
"All of it, Sam."
She pushed the sheet down, kicked it off her legs. The room was cool enough that her nipples tightened immediately, and she watched his eyes track the change on the screen, watched his throat work.
"There she is."
"You too," she said. "Fair's fair."
He shifted, and she heard the sheet move, and then he propped the phone somewhere stable and she could see him from the chest down to the thigh, not staged, just available, his hand flat on his stomach and his cock already half-hard against his hip. She made a small sound without meaning to.
"I've been thinking about you all day," he said.
"Yeah?"
"I told you what I was thinking about."
She had not forgotten. She had been carrying it around since this morning like a stone warming in her pocket — his hands around her wrists, her face in the mattress, the particular weight of him pinning her down.
"Tell me again," she said. "Please."
"I want your hands behind your back." His voice had dropped into that register that didn't exist anywhere else, that he only used with her, that she was pretty sure she was the only person on earth who had ever heard. "I want both your wrists in one of my hands, right between your shoulder blades, and I want your face pressed down into the bed so you can't do anything but take it."
"Oh, fuck."
"You like that."
"You know I like that."
"Touch yourself."
She did. Her hand between her legs, already wet, already embarrassingly ready from nothing but his voice and the word take. She ran two fingers through herself and brought them up where he could see, slick in the lamplight, and his jaw clenched.
"Jesus Christ, Sam."
"I told you. I told you this morning I couldn't focus worth a fuck."
"Put them back. Inside. I want to see."
She slid two fingers into her cunt and her hips lifted off the bed on their own, her breath stuttering, and she heard him say fuck again, quieter, almost to himself, and then his hand wrapped around his cock and started moving, slow, deliberate, and she could see the shine where he was already leaking at the tip and her mouth watered.
"I want that in my mouth," she said.
"I know you do."
"I want to choke on it."
"Baby."
"I'm not kidding, Dave. I want it in the back of my throat. I want you to hold my head."
"Fingers," he said, and his voice had gone rough, "use your fingers. Pretend it's me. Deep, like I would. Not gentle."
She did. She fucked herself on her own fingers with the heel of her hand hitting her clit on every stroke, and she watched his hand work his cock in the same rhythm, and the room filled up with the wet sound of her cunt and the slap of his palm and the two of them breathing into phones three thousand miles apart like they could close the distance by volume alone.
"Tell me what it looks like," he said. "Exactly."
"It's — God — it's so wet, it's running down to my ass, I can feel it on the sheet, I —"
"Good girl."
Her hips jerked. Those two words, in that voice, did something to her that was almost unfair.
"I'm close," she said. "Already. I'm sorry, I'm — "
"Don't apologize. Don't you dare apologize for that."
"I want you here."
"I know."
"I want you in me, I want — eight days is so long, Dave, it's so long — "
"Come on, baby. Look at me."
She looked. His face was flushed, the tendons in his neck standing out, his hand a blur on his cock now, and his eyes — his eyes were on her like she was the only thing in the world, and she thought, not for the first time and not for the last, that no one had ever looked at her this way before him and no one would again because no one else was going to be allowed to.
"Come for me," he said. "Right now. I want to watch."
She broke. Her back arched off the bed and her mouth fell open and the sound that came out of her was somewhere between a sob and his name, and her cunt clenched around her fingers so hard she could feel her own pulse, and she was still shaking when she heard him make that low growl in his throat and she forced her eyes open in time to watch him come all over his own stomach in thick white stripes, his hand still working through it, his face gone slack and stunned the way it always went, the way she loved, the way only she got to see.
For a long moment there was nothing but both of them breathing.
Then he laughed, quiet, wrecked. "Hi."
"Hi."
"You okay?"
"I think I'm dead. She killed me at the spa, and you finished the job."
"Proud of my contribution."
"You should be." She pulled her hand out from between her legs and immediately missed the fullness, even though it had only ever been her own fingers. "I made a mess of your sheets."
"Those are your sheets, baby."
"Oh, right. Well. Same problem, different zip code."
He was wiping his stomach with something off-screen, a t-shirt probably. She watched him, the easy economy of his movements, the way his shoulder rolled. She wanted to put her mouth on that shoulder. She wanted to put her mouth on every inch of him and take her time.
"Eight days," she said.
"Twenty-two hours."
"Don't round down. I need every hour I can get."
"Twenty-two and change."
"Better."
He settled back against the pillows and pulled the phone close again, his face filling the screen, the bedside lamp making his skin look gold. He looked at her the way he looked at her.
"We're going to figure out the hands thing," she said. "The behind-the-back thing. I've been thinking about it all day."
"I can tell."
"I'm flexible. I can wrap my leg around your head if we need to. We got this."
He laughed, actually laughed, and it was the best sound she'd heard in a week. "Noted. The leg is a contingency."
"The leg is a resource."
"The leg is a gift."
"Damn right it is."
He was quiet for a second, just looking at her. "Go to sleep, baby. You're going to be wrecked tomorrow if you don't."
"I'm already wrecked."
"Sleep-wrecked. It's different."
She pulled the sheet back up, just to her hip, because he liked to look. "Stay on until I fall asleep?"
"Always."
She closed her eyes. She could hear him breathing on the other end, the small shift of his body on the sheet, the click of the lamp going down another notch. She could feel the massage oil still faintly on her skin and his voice still faintly in her chest and the particular, specific impossibility of being this loved from this far away.
"Dave."
"Mm."
"Cocaine."
He huffed a laugh. "Go to sleep, Sam."
She did.
